Child Wellness

You are entrusting us to care for your child while you are at work, and we take that responsibility very seriously! Our child wellness and sick policies are in place to ensure a healthy, clean, and overall safe environment for your children.

Medical Records

Infants and One-Year-Olds: require a Child Health Report to be submitted at a minimum of every 6 months. However, to stay on top of the requirement, we highly recommend having your child’s pediatrician complete that form at your child’s 2-month, 4-month, 6-month, 9-month, 12-month, 15-month, 18-month, and 24 month appointments.

Two-Year-Olds through Age Twelve: require a Child Health Report to be submitted annually until the entrance of kindergarten.

These schedules follow the CDC recommended vaccination schedule, American Academy of Pediatrics checkup schedule, and the Department of Human Services Regulations. With the exception of the covid vaccine and the flu shot, a new child may not start at the center unless all CDC recommended vaccinations are up-to-date.

Please contact center administration for a Child Health Report Form to take with you to the pediatrician.

While our goal is to keep all children healthy by maintaining extremely high regards for sanitation and cleaning practices, children do occasionally get sick from any public place while their immune systems are still developing. For the wellness and protection of all children, we cannot accept any child for care if he/she shows any of the following symptoms:

a temperature of 101˚ or higher;

diarrhea;

vomiting;

presence of head lice/ nits,

unexplained skin rash;

green or yellow eye discharge;

any illness requiring more attention than our normal staff can give.

If your child becomes ill during the day, you or one of your child’s Emergency Contacts will be contacted to take your child home as soon as possible. No child sent home will be able to attend for 24 hours without a doctor’s note stating that they are no longer contagious. We cannot accept doctor’s notes/excuses dated prior to the day your child was sent home.

If your child goes to the doctor because they are unwell, please bring a note signed by your pediatrician that indicates 1) your child’s eligibility to return, and 2) the communicable illness (if applicable). We will notify the families of the number of children diagnosed, but not identify the child. Teachers will not disclose the identity of children who were ill or any medical history for any child.

Our center follows the advice and guidelines of Caring for Our Children, the Allegheny County Health Department, PA State Regulations, and the Academy of Pediatrics. Our center does reserve the right to exclude a child due to illness if the child cannot participate comfortably, the illness poses a risk to others, or the child requires a level of care that is greater than can be provided. If any of these criteria are met, the child may be excluded regardless of type of illness.

Sick Policy

Children often get colds and ailments that require medication. As so as a convenience to parents, we do administer medication on site. In the hands of a child, medication can be dangerous. To help us keep your children safe: parents should give medications DIRECTLY TO A STAFF MEMBER upon arrival for the day. We will quickly secure it in a locked medicine box out and of reach from the children. Please never leave their medicines in a diaper bag, backpack, or cubby!

Medications will only be administered to children with the following procedures:

All medication (prescription and/or over-the-counter), MUST be have a Medication Log fully completed. If your child has multiple medications at the center, a separate Medication Log is required for each of them.

All medication (prescription and/or over-the-counter), MUST be labeled with your child’s full name.

All medication (prescription and/or over-the-counter) , MUST be in the original container.

Prescription medication bottles MUST show: name of child, prescription number, name of doctor, dosage, and times medicine is to be administered.

Non-Prescription Medication Policies:

Non-prescription medications require a completed Medication Log.

If the package dosage states, “Consult a physician” or “Ask a Doctor”, we must have a physician’s written instructions.

Most medicines for children under the age of 2 require a physician’s note. Examples of popular brands that our parents use requiring notes are: Infant’s Tylenol, Lotrimin, Benadryl, and Children’s Motrin.

Please contact center administration for a Medication Log.
